Blog Response #11

Please answer both questions in your blog.

1.  Upon finishing your book, share any lessons or themes that the book has taught you or left you with.  When you look back on this book 5 or 10 years from now, what will you remember about it?  Where does this book rank in your list of all time favorites?

2.  What lessons has this class as a whole taught you?  With freedom comes responsibility. What did you learn in English 4B.

Comments

  1. I read the book Football Genius. The main lesson i learned from this book was to keep chasing your dreams no matter what stands in you way. Troy had a dream to help his favorite team, the Atlanta Falcons win games with his talent. Troy didn't let the people who didn't believe in him stop him. He kept pushing to make his dream come true and he finally did it. This made it easy to keep on reading because I wanted to see if Troy could get past the people who didn't believe in him and make his dream come true.

This class taught me to use my time wisely. With all the freedom we have in class it is easy to get off task. As the trimester went on started realizing that it was better to read all class long than have to cram to get the book finished. I finished my last book early and really enjoy having the free time in class. I really enjoyed this class.

  2. I read the book, Lost in the Jungle. Lessons I learned from this book is do not take anything for granted. Your life could be so amazing right now, and you think you got everything going good for you. But then one thing so minimal could happen, like meeting a new person, which could either make or break what you got going for you. When I look back on this book I will always think that others have it worse than me, and sometimes it is pure luck that separates you from life or death. I would say that this book would be as of now my all time favorite. It will be something I keep in the back of my mind as a reminder to be careful, and be grateful there is another day to live.

This class has taught me to schedule homework better, to have deadlines and how to keep up on those deadlines. Managing my time has always been a struggle, but now it has come easier after getting this freedom in class. I learned that once I start writing papers or reading books that I do not actually hate it as much as I thought I would. It is hard to start reading a book, but then the second one is easier, and the third one is the easiest, once I got into the hang of things. Overall I really enjoyed the class and the freedom that came with it.

    3. Your book sounds fascinating. I will definitely put it on my summer reading list. The book that I am reading, The Things They Carried, is about soldiers in Vietnam and is similar to your novel in the way that they also cannot take anything for granted. One mistake could change the course of their life forever, so they learn to appreciate the little things that keep them sane. Things that make them think of home.

    4. I've also struggled a lot with managing my time. I also think that the freedom in class has definitely helped me work on that skill.

  3. Since the book is about my favorite fighter ever and a big role model for me this book will definitely stick with me and will probably read it again. The theme is definitely never stop fighting, Cody and Maddux both had several speed bumps to reach the promise that they made to each other. Cody has set backs whether it was personal problems or injuries but he pushes though to keep his promise to win the UFC bantamweight title. Maddux has a promise to stay alive and beat cancer. There are several times where he gets sick and his chances look bleak but he pushes through and is strong to this day.
I learned my lessons about this class before i started. My buddy almost failed so i knew I couldn't lay back to much.

  4. I read ”If You're Reading This” by Trent Reedy. The biggest thing that will stick with me for the rest of my life is what Makes dad's letter said first was the Cowboy way which basically means never be afraid to something because you will regret not taking chances and wedding your horizons. Second is never be afraid to the right thing even if it's not the most popular thing to do because it will pay off in the end just give it time. This book out of all the books I've read in High School has definite ranked number one and my favorite because it happens right here in Iowa.

Lessons that English 4B has taught me are how to manage my time wisely and use my time effectively and efficiently in class so I don't have homework and when I need to spend little extra time outside of classes to get things turned in on time and putting in a little extra time here and there is well worth it and pays off. I has also taught me to be self reliant and more independence.

  5. I read the book, The Things They Carried, by Tim O'Brien. The theme in this book is the fact that a person has to find a way to accept the things they cannot change. For Tim O'Brien, that was having to accept the fact that he was drafted during the time of the Vietnam War and coping with the realities of war. When I look back on this book in 5 to 10 years, I will remember how each soldier had to find their own way to deal with the war and how the soldiers formed a brotherhood that only they, as soldiers, could understand. They carried things with them to help them deal with their everyday struggles. For some, it was a photo, a Bible, moccasins, pantyhose, etc. Something that offered the comforts of home and civilization. I would not rank this book as my number one favorite, but it was definitely a worthwhile read. I learned more about the Vietnam War by reading this book than I did from my Modern U.S. History class.

Lessons I have learned from English 4B have been to appreciate reading novels that are not always in my comfort zone. I read books that I would not normally have chosen for myself, and I learned a great deal from them. Also, I learned to appreciate writing skills, because it is one of the best ways to express oneself. Writing is a freedom I have come to realize I cherish. In English 4B, I truly appreciated the freedom of working at my own pace. It felt good to push myself to do my best and produce good papers. Also, it felt good to expand my knowledge when reading novels that taught me about important moments in history.

    4. My book also has a theme like yours how a person has to find a way to accept the things they cannot change. One rest of my characters, Jeff, is dying in the hospital and the rest of his friends are super sad about it, but there is nothing that they can do. So they have to find a way to accept the things that they can not change.

  6. 1.Id say the theme in my book is Mistrust of different people, because when the wolves took Mowgli in and raised him in the wolf pack they liked him but they had to get rid of him out of the pack, because Sheer Khan was in there part of the jungle and was killing cows. So they knew Mowgli was the problem so they had to let him go just because he was different from the wolves. Ill remember that Sheer Khan is a flamer. Not much of a reader but its in the middle.

  7. What i learned from reading the book Night was that family is what can keep you going despite loosing everything else, including your dignity. In about 5-10 years i will always remember from the book that you cant survive in the world alone and know that some people will always have your back no matter what. This book is definitely one of the 10 best books i have ever read but there are books that are not as cold as this one.

This class overall has taught me that i can read an entire book and enjoy it even though i never had an interest in reading it on my own. Because of the freedom in the class i had to work with other students to get the group discussions done. Most of all i enjoyed reading the same book as other kids and got their own opinion of the books we read.

  10. I read the book Night and a common theme or lesson that was in the book could be never lose hope no matter how hard life gets. Just because one person has it good another person could be fighting to stay alive. In 5-10 years from now I will still remember what Night was about because no one should be able to forget the tragedy the Jews went through. This book is in the top 3 of my favorite books. It was a true story and at times you could not set the book down which is what you want in reading a great book. This class taught me how important time management is and how important it is to turn anything in on time. The freedom in this class made me want to get my stuff done I did not want to go home and read to the deadlines, that I had set for myself when I could have at least started that in class.

  11. Matthew Vorwald here. As far as lessons that the book taught me, I think one of them is don't spend the rest of your life obsessing over something that you want to find. If I look at this book again 5-10 years down the road, I'll still think it's a great book based on one of my favorite movies of all time. This book would rank number 5 on my scale. As far as what I learned in this class, I learned that it can actually be kind of fun to talk about the book you're reading. This is by far, one of my favorite English classes I've ever taken.

  12. Upon finishing the book Blacklist, the main theme throughout the book is never jump to conclusions. Throughout this book, the detective and the press believe Aster killed Madison, when in reality she didn't. They just wanted a cut and close case to the celebrity. In 5 years, I think I will remember that Aster didn't kill Aster and that no authorities believed her. It isn't one of my most memorable books for I don't like the cliffhanger ending. I really thought this book would have an ending and give my closure, but it did the complete opposite.
As a whole this class has taught me independence and time management. Everything goes at your own pace, while still having a certain period of time to complete the said tasks. I liked having my own space while completing these books and having the freedom to do it whenever, as long as I got the class done efficiently.

  13. I read the book Night. This book taught many different lessons. One lesson was to never give up hope, sooner or later it will get better or end. Always keep going no matter what obstacles are in your way. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Looking back on this book in 5 to 10 years, I will always remember the tragic deaths the Jews suffered and the cruelty of the Germans treating humans like animals. In my rank of favorites, I think this book would be in my top 10 but I have read books that I enjoyed more than this one. I did really enjoy this book and learning more about the holocaust but as with every book, there are negatives as well.

This class has taught me to be more responsible and manage my time. I learned a lot about writing papers and how to make my papers better. I liked how much freedom we had, I think it made it easier to do all of the things we did because you could actually enjoy doing it and not hate the class or the assignments.

  14. I read Allegiant and i'd say a big lesson is sacrifice is worth it. Tris' brother Caleb did some very bad things but in the end she sacrificed everything to show that she still loved him and thats big. I'll probably remember the basic plot since I've read it a few times. I don't rank books but it was a pretty good one.

This class has definitely taught me to use my time wisely. I was never good at that but i had to get better to get a good grade. I guess i learned how to write a few different types of papers.

  15. I read the book "The Kite Runner" One of the lesson that reader can learn though reading the book is how not do judge other people actions. in this book they were two kids who became friends even when they were from different social class. One of them his name was Aimr he always wonder why his dad always prefer Hassan when he only was a "Servant". At the end Aimr regret how he stop been friends with him and stop helping him when he needed because he found out they were half brothers and Baba his father never told him. At the end he understood why his dad always Hassan rather than Aimr. Something i would remember from this book from 10 years is how after everything they went though the two boys still love each other as brother even though they didn't know they were brothers. From all the book i have read i feel that this book is on my top.
On this class i learn to be responsible to get reading done on time even when there a little time and how to manage my time with writing the blogs.

  16. 1. i don't really think my book, Shooting the Moon, taught me anything to take into the real world but it shows to love the things that are in your life right now, because they can be taken away at any moment. when she said good bye to her brother, there wasn't ever a promise that he would come back. but she cherished the moments she had with him.

  17. My book has taught me a lot of lessons one being to never give up, you always have more in the tank. During Stotan week, the 4 boys go through some insane workouts. Some of them i don't even think could be possible for the human body to complete, but the boys kept pushing. They had a mindset that they could not give up and give in. So the main lesson i learned from my book is to never give up, because my body is able to accomplish some incredible things. In 5 years i will remember all the hard things that these characters went through and i will remember that almost anything is possible. This book ranks number 1 or 2 of my all time favorites next to Running Loose.

This class has taught me a lot of time management skills. I enjoy the layout of the class and how we can go at our own pace for the most part. I learned in English 4B that if i want to finish my book, i have to keep track of my time and put the phone down and read, or else i would never get it finished.

I would rank this book number 12 of my all time favorite books.

    2. In this class, I learned how to manage my time better. There were a lot of times where I couldn't focus in class, but when I got home, instead of messing around, I would use my time better by reading in order to stay caught up.

  20. I read the book Red Kayak, by Priscilla Cummings. One lesson that I took away from this novel is to follow your gut feeling, Brady Parks didn't want to speak up to anyone about what his friends had done to the kayak. The gilt was starting to weigh him down so he knew telling the right people is what he had to do because he would feel relieved after. This book kept me guessing what was going to happen next. I definitely would say this was in my top 5 so far. In 5 to 10 years I will remember the guilt that they carried for being responsible for the crime they committed.

This year English class taught me to be responsible for my own work and to get it done in time. I mostly enjoyed the freedom in this class and that helped me manage my time more wisely. I would try to read daily so I wouldn't have to cram everything in before the deadlines.

  21. The theme i got from this book is that no matter how good or bad you life is it can be turned upside down anytime. When i look back in ten years and think about reading this book ill probably remember when Elie found out that his dad died because he didn't care that much he was done with wanting to live. This book is my 4th best book ive read. One big thing this class has taught me is to use your time getting stuff done not messing around.

  22. Some lessons the book taught me was don't ever lose hope. Eliezar was in that dire situation where he was facing life or death everyday but he still had the courage to look forward to the future and hope that one day the camp will be liberated. I think to myself, if he doesn't lose hope during that, I can't. If I look back to this book, i'll remember how strong Eliezar was to go through all of that and to make all of those sacrifices. This book would probably rank in my top 5.

This class has taught me that it's ok to mess around a little bit, as long as you do what you need to do and get everything done. I also learned how to summarize books into little passages to share out to everyone else.

  24. I think that my book (Boy Erased) has taught be to be myself. The major conflict was him accepting himself. At the end of the book, he finally accepts himself as who he is. I think that what I will remember most from this book is his time in the conversion therapy program. Since is book is about the authors experience in Love In Action (the therapy program), this part sticks with me more because I know that these parts are real. This book was not one of my absolute favorites because it was confusing at some points but I would still recomend it for anyone who wants to read it.

  26. 'Girl in Pieces' by Kathleen Glasgow has many valuable lessons that people can take from it, but the one that stuck with my the most is that things do get better, even if they are at there worse and everything is going down hill, it will get better and it will be okay. This book is most definitely on my top five all time favorites, and would probably be ranked as number four. When I look back at this book five or ten years from now, I will remember that, like Charlie, I survived the issues I went through and that this book isn't just another book with a happy ending, it has a realistic ending for if you do try to get better.

This class has taught me to keep to a schedule when reading books and to not procrastinate because you will fall behind. It taught pretty good time management skills, and that if you get your work done at school then you most definitely will not need to do it at home.

  27. I read the book Divergent and one lesson i learned is to be yourself. In my book Tris is a divergent and if her society finds out she will be killed. They are a danger to the society because their minds don't work like others do. When i look back in the future i will remember that the book taught me to always be myself no matter what. This book was my favorite book i have read over the 4 years of high school. This class has taught me that i am not a fan of reading even more then before, but it taught me time management that will be useful for college.

    3. I also agree. Society will judge you weather you like it or not. But what really matters is how you react to it.

  28. Some things I learned about the book nice is treat people as you want to be treated. The way these Jewish people were treated is just the most humane thing. Also not to judge people by their race or religion. Those are the main things but some of the minor ones i took away you can get through anything if you have the right mentality. One thing ill remember about this book in 10 years is that I read it in 3rd tri 2nd period English 4b my senior year with Mrs. B. Id say this book is number 2 on my all time list behind unbroken.
I Liked being independent. There isn't going to be a teacher holding my hand all throughout the year in college and you prepared us for that. If i have something that is due I have to get it done and i'm not going to get a reminder from my teacher. What i learned from this class is responsibility and time management which is crucial to college life.

  29. The book that i have completed was black and white and the best thing about this book that I had learned from was that not to give up on your dreams and not to let the hatters get to you and i learned that it doesn't matter about your skin color its about all the hard work you put into the sport that you love and I feel like it was awesome how he brought back the championship to his city and proved all the people that doubted him wrong

The best thing that i gained from English is now a new passion to read books i can say i'm not ever known fro reading but now i found a way to take my mind off of things in life and just open a book and read and just picture what is going on in the book and i can say i had the best English teacher in the whole school community Mrs.Broadbent made learning fun.

  30. i read the book skinny and one lesson that I learn is that no matter what u look like how you act you can always change for the better Ever davis in the beginning was a quiet shy girl that didn't talk to anyone because she didn't to draw attention to the weight she was carrying around she wanted to be invisible but as she started to go to the doctor and get on a diet she got more and confident in herself making her look more happy and healthy then what she acted like before she has grow into a more confident being and it was a good experience to read something like this to have a idea to understand other people that are going through the same problem. all in all it was a good read i highly recommend it.

  31. I read the book Note To Self and one of the lessons I learned is that it's okay to open up about how you feel. Keeping the bad thoughts in your own head doesn't do a lot except make you feel worse. When I look back on this book, I'll probably remember that even when I'm not at my best, it's okay to feel that way. I'm not alone with how i feel, because other people feel the same thing too. This book is high up among the other books I've read throughout high school. It would definitely be in my top five because of the great lessons I've learned from it.

I personally think this class taught me about responsibility and time management. I needed to keep up with the rest of my group fr discussions and always did. I found myself using time outside of class to stay caught up.

    2. I agree with your statement, this is another lesson I could pin point in my book. My main character had a lot happen to her in a short amount of time. It nice to see her finally open up about her feelings to her boyfriend.

  32. in the book night the main character taught everyone a lesson after he wrote the book and this was to never give up and never lose hope when you are stuck in hell. in the future i will remember how all the Jews were treated and how they lost a lot of their race at this time. this book is in my top five it was a fast read and i like most of the history books.

this class taught me that you have to work hard for your grade and that you have to keep on your own schedule to get done with the book on time. English has a lot of free time and you have to learn to use it as you want. also i learned that english 4b is a lot easier the 4a.

I read the book "ghost hawk" and the theme of the book was in 1700's and the lesson of the book was sadness is not the only thing in the world or revenge in the book the main reason s to find out who killed all the people in the village and why did they skin the wolf so at the end of they found the reason why they skin the wolf.

    2. The whole time of English class was to get the work done in time

  34. 1.) I Read the book fantasy League and the main theme of my book is if its a good idea it shouldn't matter who is telling you. anyone can help you no matter age race or gender, everyone has ideas that can impact the world. in 5 years i will most likely forget about this book because it really didn't stand out to me very much. this is a good book but isn't one of my favorite books i liked it but it wasn't a book that really stuck out to me and i wouldn't be able to read it twice

2.) the most important thing i learned in English class is how to manage my time and how to get things done when i don't have a step by step program to follow. this will help me in the long run because in college every class is like this so it really helped.

this class was not a normal english class. the teacher didnt give lectures you were more of on your own and you hadhad to make your own schedual and know when everything was due so that taught me a bunch of responsabilty.

  37. 1. This book easily ranks in my top 3 all time books. One of the themes in the book is how strong friendships can be even after a fight or two and even after not talking for months the two characters in my book were able to come back closer friends than they were before their fight. If someone were to mention this book in 5 years i dont know how much of it i would remember but one of the things i would remember is Will's personality because he reminds me of one of my best friends.

    2. I have learned a few different things in the class but one of the major ones is when you are reading a book to pay attention to the smaller things because there is a chance that they could have a second meaning or a major part later in the book

    ReplyDelete
  38. I read the silent boy. If i look back 5 to 10 years ago i would see you can do whatever you put your mind to. Katy said she wanted to be a dovtoer when she grows up and that is what she did. She dreamed of following her dads footsteps an that is what she did. This class has taught me a couple things. It taught me that you cant judge a book by the cover. The book that i thaught looked good was not good at all. This class has made me like reading a little more than i use to.

  39. 1. i read shooting the moon, personally i didn't enjoy it. it was slow at times and it didn't go into detail with anything, but i do know that the story had a deep meaning in the end. when Jamie's brother goes to war she is dead set on seeing him again, but when she is told that he is MIA (missing in action) she is forced to except the fact that she might never see him again. this tells me to take a second look at everything, because some day it might be gone.

    2. English 4 taught me so much that i wish i knew sooner, it taught me that books really are not that scary and papers don't suck unless you make it suck. if you don't want to do something, your grade will reflect that, but if you sit down and work hard and read all of the directions, you're set.

    2. That's a really deep hitting lesson right now. It truly makes you think how brittle life is, and how you could lose almost everything in a instant. That's truly terrifying. But to me, books were never that intimidating. In most cases, every time that I have read a book, I have always taken a meaningful lesson from the book.

  40. I read the book called I have lived a Thousand Years. If I look back about 5 to 10 years ago I would say that this book taught me to always be brave about something, even though its cruel shall, you at least lived through it. That is what the jew citizens thought while at the concentration camps. I learned as class a whole is that express how you write. In English 4B I learned that reading is used in everyday life and it will never go away, even if you don't like to read.

  41. I read the book The Hate You Give and the biggest lesson I learned form the book was to never give up on what you believe in. Starr's best friend was shot in front of her and she had to be his voice. Khalid was innocent and and Starr did her best it represent him the book ended with the grand jury's verdict and with Starr saying I will never be quite and I will always be his voice. She never gave up and she said she never would give up. It showed me that no matter what whatever you believe is okay and its okay to fight for it. She never gave up and she was always strong and I admire Starr for that.
This book ranks pretty high on my list of favorites and from this class I earned that you are responsible for you and no one is going to take care of you just because you missed class. Class still goes on even when your not there and I also leaned how to pace myself and meet deadlines. Overall this class helped me embrace my responsibility and accountability.

  43. The book taught me to face adversity even when the outcome looks bleak. Taught me to never give up despite the low chances of success. I also learned to appreciate those who are wiser than i am as they wont be around forever. Overall this book has been a fun read and i learned a bit from it. I would recommend this book for anyone who is a fan of an action adventure story.

This class has taught me to use my time wisely. It also taught me to be able to set goals to help me finish tasks. Overall this class was really chill which allowed me to work at a pace i wanted to work at, and i liked that.

  44. I read the novel The Hate U Give and the biggest lesson I have learned from the book is to always speak out for what you believe in. After she was pressured into speaking to the cops she came to the realization that Khalil didn't have a voice and neither did Natasha or any other African American men, women, or children that had their lives stripped away from brutal attacks on innocent people. Starr stands up even when her friend turns her back on her and she received hate comments. When I look back on this novel a few years down the will remember the feeling of being in her shoes when she rallies around her cause and I hope to always fight for what i think it is right. This book is definitely high on my list of favorites.

  45. My book taught me to really think about your decisions before you go through with them. Remy the main character in my book almost made the decision to leave town and move away with his girlfriend, once he got thinking about it he made the choice to stay home because he wanted to and it wasnt his girlfriends choice, it was his own. he also stayed home because his dad was going to sell the family land to help him pay to move away and inside he felt wrong for his dad doing that. if i look back at this book in 5 or 10 years ill remember the choices remy had to make throughout the book. this book falls closer to the top of the books ive read.

this class has taught me time management because it was our own responsibility to read every night to get out book done on time and to get the blogs done by the right time. overall i really enjoyed the class because it allowed me to work at my own pace and get things done during class instead of outside class.

  46. 1. After reading Little secrets I believe the over all lesson of the book is that make sure you really know a person before you fully let them into your life. When I look back on this book in ten years the thing I will remember the most is that you have to such and push though to find the answers you need and want. So where this book would fall in my all time favorite books it would just fall short of my top ten because it is a pretty good book but it does not top some of my favorite books of all time.

    2. I think what I have learned over all in this class is that yo have to grow up a little bit and get you work done so when it is time to meet as a group you can make the whole group successful. I think what I have learned in all of English this year is that in the real world you have to put in the work to find results.

  48. I read Les Miserables, and the biggest life lesson that I have learned from reading this book is that there is suffering in almost every facet of our society, as well as in other societies as well. Some people suffer more than others, and in some cases, those people cannot escape their suffering. In addition to that, I learned that there was substantially more suffering in the past, especially during the era this book takes place (which is the early 19th century). If I was to look back and try to remember one thing about this book ten years from now, it would probably the sheer length and complexity of the story. There were a lot of characters that were interconnected with one another in some way shape or form, and the reader could genuinely sympathize with the characters. This book is one of my more favored ones, but out of my all time favorites, I'd have to say it is my second most favorite book.

  49. I read the book The Mammy by Brendan Ocarroll witch has many theams but one really stuck with me and that is never give up no matter your struggles. So the book takes place in the sixtys during the great depression. the main charchter has to support her seven kids on her own because her husband recently passed away. through many hardships such as getting well fare, son having cancer, and her husband dying she learns to never give up. If i were to take away anything from this book it would be never give up and if i would rate this book it would be a 12 out of 10.

The main thing i learned in this class is dont procrastinate. i thought this class was going to bea quick slide by ordeal but i was qucikly mistaken and faced with the option to be lazy or pass high school.

  50. one theme that really stood out in the book i had seen castles was the theme of innocence. At the beginning of the book john is just like any normal teenage boy but when the Japanese bomb pearl harbor john takes this personally and has his mind set on joining the army. when he finally gets in and is able to fight he discovers the hard truth of war and kills many men and sees many fellow soldier be killed, as well as many other atrocities. he lost his innocence during the war and after the war he is dead inside and is nothing like the man he was before. if i were to look back on this book ten years from now one thing i would remember would be all the funny parts in the book. out of all the books i have read i would rank this one of my top 5 favorite books of all time.

one thing that i learned from this class is to be very responsible with your time.if you use your time in the class wisely you will succeed and do great. other than that i didnt really learn anything .

  51. I read the book Crazy Rich Asians and the lesson I learned was to don't let others push you around. While Rachel was over in the Singapore, Nick's family tried everything to scare her away. Rachel stood up the horrible tricks and held her ground. After an incident with a fish prank, she didn't say anything about her and became the bigger person. I think it's inspiring to see a person keep control of her emotions and doesn't let the bully win. I think I will always remember the way Nick's family treated Rachel and all of Astrid's POV. I thought Astrid was a real badass and I loved the way she lived her life. This book isn't at the top of my list but I still thought it was a really good book. I think my all time favorite books are Dark Places and The Female of the Species.

This class taught me to be more responsible with my work. With all the freedom we had in class sometimes it was hard to stay on track, but I knew I had to get it done. It also helped me plan out when we needed to get to a certain part in our books.

  53. The one lesson that i took away from This Present Darkness is to stay true to your background. This book gives clear depictions on how and why you need to do this. In 5 to 10 years i feel like i can fall back on this book and just know that through all the struggles that come our ways there will always be light at the end of the tunnel. And what English 4B has taught me was how much I actually like to read if I have a chance to.
