The endings of Chinese Handcuffs, Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, Running Loose, and Stotan! leave the reader with some unanswered questions. Chris Crutcher assumes the reader knows the ending, but he doesn't come out and say it.  You take control and write the overview of one more chapter to these books.  If there was one last chapter, what would it be about.  How would you tie up loose ends, if you were the author?

Comments

  1. Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes just ends like Eric is basically like oh well we will see what happens and I wanted more. If I could write one more chapter I would fast forward to Eric's first day at college and like how his first swim practice went. I would make him better like he would be recovered from his injury and get to get back in the water. I would also have Jody and Eric work out and still be going strong. For Sarah I would write it where she earned a full scholarship to the school she wants to go to. Just for fun I would have Lemry get pregnant and be expecting twins. At the very end I would have Eric's dad reach out to him and be like hey lets catch up. His dad would get to meet Jody and learn about Sarah and maybe even go to a swim meet. I would end the book with Eric wining the swim meet his dad went to and a hug between the too just because I like a happy ending.

    1. This is a great idea for a chapter!! I also like happy endings but my happy ending was Virgil dying but i think we have the same theme basically.

    2. I did not read your book but i would consider it especially if it had that ending because that sounds like a good ending

    3. That would be an awesome way to end the book. It would be cool to hear about Eric's college life with swimming and his recovery. I also think Eric's dad should be involved to add something more to that aspect of Eric's life.

    4. I personally would not bring Eric's dad back because he's been gone for so long and a close connection with him would take more than an ending chapter.

    5. it explains how Eric felt bad about Carver having to go to jail on weekends for about 6 months, he told his mom he would start calling him dad when he was back and i think adding Eric's real dad into the story would be very interesting to see how it plays out.

  2. To write the ending to Running Loose I would have Louie getting a scholar ship to a college for long distance running, and cross country. He would go for mechanics and business management and come back start running Norms station. He would also buy his own rock that said what he wanted for Becky's marmoreal instead of Jasper's sign that he kept signing. Louie would also become a marathon runner on his free time.

    2. I think that would be a great ending to the story. I agree that Louie would go to college for running. I feel like there should be a happy ending to balance out the bad in the book.

    3. I would also have Louie running track in college. I agree on the marathon runner he is big on the running and is good at it.

  3. In my book Stotan, the book ended with Walker talking like he is an observer and then heads out to set things straight with Devnee. I believe that if another chapter were added, Walker would tell Devnee that he liked Elaine but he knew that they could not be together. Then Walker asks Devnee that he is ready to be more serious about their relationship and to keep that relationship into college. Before they do that Walker and the guys head over to the grave of Jeff and wish eachother luck as they pursue their careers and will always be a Stotan. Finally the book ends with a plaque by the school pool that reads, " In the memory of Jeff, dedicated swimmer and a stotan all the way."

    1. I agree with you Logan, I think Jeff will pass away. However, I do not think Walker and Devnee will stay together. I think Jeff will break up with Devnee and pursue a relationship with Elaine.

    2. i also agree, Jeff is soon going to pass and the boys will finally realize how to get over the loss and use is death to fuel themselves

  4. I read Stotan, and yes I was left with questions. I was left wondering how Jeff ended up and what happened in Walker and Devnee's relationship. I would have definitely wrote another chapter. In that chapter i would make it clear if Jeff survived or if he passed away. I would have Jeff break up with Devnee and go after his true love Elaine. They would be dating by the end of the book. I would also talk about what the future holds for Jeff. I would state all the colleges he got scholarships from and what college he chose to swim at. I would end the book with Jeff diving into the pool for his first college swim meet.

  5. i read Stotan! and there are some questions that are left unanswered. my extra chapter review would be. Jeff would soon pass away and the rest of the team would finish out the season in memory of Jeff. They would over come the loss and use that to fuel the rest of the season. However, the team would fall just a little short, due to being down a person and they would end up getting second i state sadly.

    2. I agree that Jeff would die in the final chapter but it would be nice to have a plaque as a memorial to Jeff for being a true stotan.

    3. I agree I would end the book differently than it ended. I would also end with the book by Jeff passing away so that someone can swim in his place but it would not be the same as if he was there.

  6. I read the book running loose and the last chapter i would add on would be louie destroying the stone and making a new one and donating the new stone to the school. The next part of the chapter would consist of louie getting a scholarship to go run track but he would major in some type of mechanic job or business so he can eventually take over the gas station and gas hauling business and the book would end with louie finding a new girl and marrying her and living happily ever after.

    2. this is a good idea for a last chapter i also wish that he would have talked about Louie going to school or not. i think the last chapter would be good if they talked more about Louie's choice to go to school or not.

    3. I could also see Louie taking over the business once he comes back from college. I think he could get a running scholarship too. Maybe Carter could get a football scholarship and be able to play football at the same college Louie runs at. Then they could continue their friendship.

      Delete
    4. I think that would be a great way for an ending chapter. I wish that they would say what Louie had at least planned to do after high school.

      Delete
    5. I would also agree that I can see Louie going to college getting a track scholar ship and coming back and run the family business. I would also agree with Jacob and can see carter getting a full ride scholarship for football and coming back to coach football for Lendecky. I could also see Jasper and Lendecky getting caught up and charged with something over not letting Louie play and putting a target on an opponents back to hurt him.

  7. For staying fat for Sarah Byrnes i would have it go few years into the future and kinda reflect what happened over the last few years. I would have people raise money for Sarah to have plastic surgery and after she finally decides to do it she kinda moves away to start a new life and is happy. For Eric i would have him have a complete recovery from his injury and then he goes off to college to swim and he becomes the best and down the road like how many years later he starts training this kid named Micheal Phelps. In the end i would talk a little bit about Sarah's dad in prison and then end the book with him getting shanked by another prisoner and him dying because i just like happy endings.

    3. I also liked the idea of the book going into the future and then reflecting on the past a bit. It would be cool for people to raise the money for Sarah, but I don't think she would ever go through with it. That's an interesting ending, but maybe if it was an actual chapter it would work out well.

  8. For my book Chinese Handcuffs, if I was the author, i would add one chapter showing Dillon and Jennifer hanging out with each other and finding out that T.B. got arrested down in Florida, and Jennifer being happy that he's now locked up for good. I think that would be a much better way to end the book than what Chris Crutcher did before.

  9. reading staying fat leaves the reader with a bunch of unanswered questions. sharas dad goes to prision and shara gets adopted but what happens afterward. shara is still going to have to deal with her burns and scars in college and for the rest of her life. eric and jody are together but for how long? will they stay together? and what happens after sharas dad after he gets out of prision. he is only going to be there for a handful of years. will erics mom and carver get married. there is a lot of question i wanted answered but i just didnt get. if i could write one more chapter it would be years down the road and eric and jody are married and is still friends with shara and even shara found the one for her and she got surgery to heal her face and i would write that sharas dad got killed in prision and erics mom and carver are married. they would all go to the funeral and get closure for everything that virgil did to them. thats how i would end the book.

  10. I read Chinese handcuffs and if i could make a last chapter for the book i would have made it a little bit farther into the future to see where the characters ended up. 3. I would also like to see Carter get a football scholarship and Louie get a running scholarship, maybe even at the same college. I could also see Louie coming back after college to coach the track program and maybe even take over the football team as revenge against Lednecky and Jasper.

      Delete
    4. I would also like to see Louie get a scholarship to run track in college and, later, coach at the high school in Trout. I, also, think it would be great if Louie would have a new love interest in his life, especially once he is settled into teaching/coaching at the high school.

    5. I could also see Louie buying something to remember Becky that was not signed by Mr. Jasper. To replace the one he has busted out twice know. I could also see him coming back to coach track with Madison and could also see him running marathons in his free time too

    2. in stotan all the characters and issues with peoples families were described well. the thing that Chris Crutcher did is he would make little stories about characters and keep those stories going but never finish them, with walker he kept a little side story going on bout him and his girlfriend and another girl he wants but never cleared up what happened

  14. Chinese Handcuffs did leave me with a lot of unanswered questions. In another chapter I would tie up all those loose ends. I would show Jen and her family being happy without T.B. and then Jen eventually finding out that he was arrested. I would maybe have a scene about Jennifer at therapy with hints that her and Dillon might have a relationship in the future. I would maybe have had Dillon healed from his injury, running his first iron man. The characters in this book have gone through a lot and it would've been good to see them all happy for the time being and hopefully after.

  15. If i could add another chapter to the book i would talk about what happens with T.B. and the future between Jen and Dillon or even Dillon and Stacy. I would also talk about Stacy more because she wasn't really in the book towards the end. I would talk about her and Ryan and how Ryan would meet his grandpa. Really i would just want like an actual ending to everyone's lives since we got told about so many.

    3. Stotan is the same way with a lot of unanswered questions just like your book. but there were a couple main questions that i wanted to know about my book just like you want to know about yours.

    4. I agree that everyone in the book should have an ending instead of leaving it open without knowing. I think it would great to have Ryan meet his grandpa and have a meaningful moment.

      Delete
    5. i think that would be a very good way to add on to they book and explain what he goes through after he was arrested and how he is treated in jail. and adding how Ryan would meet his grandpa would make the story that much better bringing their family back together some

      Delete
  16. If I added another chapter to Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, it would be a chapter set in the future where most of the characters meet up again after the college years. Jody and Eric would still be together and be engaged. Sarah would still look the same, and she would still have her attitude and personality, but she would be a lot more comfortable with who she is and not having to worry about Virgil. Lemry would be there as well as Eric's mom and Carver. Ellerby would tell thrilling exaggerated stories. Brittain would also be there, feeling happy with his life. We would hear all about their lives at the moment and a few extra things about the past, tying up some loose ends people still have questions about. The environment and feeling from the book would be wholesome and comforting. Then at the end, I would leave a cliff hanger, but instead have Eric's dad come back. The last line being one of Eric's thoughts on how he's surprised to see his dad. Then the book would end.

    3. I really like your idea for the last chapter except I wouldn't Eric's father to come back. I think that Eric is better off with out him, because lets face it that Carter is a better dad than Eric's actual father. I really like thinking that Lemry offered to help Sarah fix her face but she refused because it is what makes her who she is.

      Delete
    4. I also like this idea for the last chapter, but think Eric's dad shouldn't come back because that may create another loose end that would need to be tied up because he hasn't seen his dad in a while and you can't just openly throw him in like nothing is wrong.

  17. I read Running Loose and if i had to write another chapter for the book i would explain what Louie did with the sledge hammer. Even though i knew he was going down to re-destroy the stone under the tree, i still wish the author gave some detail about ho he did it and how Louie got away with it also. I would want to know where Mr. Jasper was while he destroyed it, and what Jasper's reaction was when he found out. The author could even go along and make Jasper try to get revenge on Louie and maybe even get him in trouble for doing so and send him to jail. i think every reader would appreciate him going to jail because i believe everybody hates Jasper who has read this book and they would also like to see him in jail. If the author wanted to still leave us with some unanswered questions after explaining what happened with the stone, he could say that Louie got a letter in the mail from a big college with a picture of a runner on the front of the letter. That would leave another cliff hanger and make people wonder if Louie is going to go run in college.

    1. I, also, would love to know Jasper's reaction after the plaque is destroyed the second time. It's hilarious to think that in order for Louie to know that Jasper was there keeping watch, Louie would have had to park away from the school and sneak over to see Jasper guarding the plaque with his beloved signature.

    2. I would have loved to have seen Jasper's reaction to Louie destroying the plaque a second time as well, and to see if Jasper would take any legal action against Louie this time.

  18. If I was to write another chapter in Running Loose, I would have Louie win a scholarship for running track. After college, where Louie studies to be a physical education teacher, he would return to Trout and replace Coach Lednecky, who has since retired. He would not only be a great physical education teacher, he would also be an excellent high school coach. While teaching, Louie would develop a love interest with a woman who recently moves to Trout. They would eventually marry and have a family of their own.

    1. That would be a really cool way to wrap up Louie's character arc. Also the pure irony of Louie coming back to coach in Trout just sounds too perfect. Neat idea.

      Delete
    2. That sounds like it would be a great ending. I like the idea that Louie would take Lednecky's spot as a coach so he could teach his football players how to play ball the right way.

      Delete
  19. I personally enjoyed the way that Running Loose had ended though it didn't tie up all of the loose ends, it did imply how Louie was going to bring a hammer to the plaque again for Becky's memorial by the tree. If there were to be another chapter, I feel like it should include scholarships that Louie would've gotten for his track, him getting the community to have a plaque made instead of Jasper. I would think it would be neat if Crutcher had Louie become the new head coach at Trout High School, but going by his senior year and the fact that Louie wanted out of the town, I feel like he would go elsewhere to become either a coach.

    ReplyDelete
  20. When it comes to the book Running Loose, I was not a big fan of how it ended. Throughout the whole book I was questioning some of Louie's choices but what he does to the plaque in Becky's honor is just straight dumb. If I were to add a chapter to the book I would start with Louie's first day of college and he goes out for the football team. He makes a name for himself at wide receiver. After a year he transfers to the college of Carter's choice and they play the first few games of the season together. Then their last game of the season pits them against the college Boomer got accepted to. They trash talk, halfheartedly, before the game starts and the book ends as soon as the ball is snapped on the first play of regulation.

  22. I personally did not like the ending of Stotan!. It was very open ended and there was very little clues saying what will happen. If I were to write another chapter, it would be about Walker and Devnee's relationship and how he would set it straight. Which I think would mean that he would let her go and talk to Elaine about their feelings but it could go either way knowing Walker. In this chapter Jeff would eventually die, probably a slow and painful death with his condition, and they would spend a majority of the chapter mourning and talking about memories or their feelings and hurt. I would make the ending less questionable and more memorable with conclusions and answers.

  23. I read the book Stotan! The book ends with numerous unanswered questions at the end, so the next chapter that I would write would answer the questions.I would also write about what happened to Jeff. We do not know if he ended up living or not. The book ended saying how walker wants to end things with his girlfriend like he said that so many times. The last sentence of the book says "But first things first. Right now I've got to get dressed and go pick up Devnee. Gotta set her straight." so we do not know what he is going to talk to her about but we can assume it is to talk about ending their relationship. The last thing I would resolve in the book would be about where their lives were going after the swim season.

    2. I agree with that, part of me thinks that if we had another chapter Walker might be too afraid to break up with her. There needs to be some answers regarding the future of all the main characters. Are they going to keep swimming or not, I don't want to assume what the future holds without knowing what truly happens. We definitely need another chapter to end the book.

  24. If I were to write a final chapter in Chinese Handcuffs I would have another part of the epilogue that discusses the fate of Jen and Stacy. Crutcher touched on Dillon and on T.B but he never talked about Stacy or Jen; which would of tied all the loose ends up in the book. I would have Jen go to college and show the life of Stacy with Ryan as a single mother. I enjoyed the book so much and this would make the ending even better.

  25. If there was a next chapter to complete the book Louie Would get a scholarship to a college for cross country and track. He would then study to be a lawyer like Mr. Sanders and take after his career. He would get married to his best friend Sally that always picked on him in junior high and live happily ever after.

  26. if I could write the next chapter in the book staying fat for Sarah Byrnes I would have Carver is back and is a part of Eric's life. Eric gets a full ride to collage and races against Brittain and Ellerby at nationals for swimming and has a internal struggle over racing his friends for the trophy. Sarah Byrnes gets in to collage and works in a group home for kids in Kansas. Eric & Jody are still together even though the great distance that separates both of them. Brittain and Eric become respected friends and have worked out their problems.

  27. If there was another chapter in Running Loose I would assume Louie would go to college to run long distance, because he learned to like it. Also he was good at running. I would assume Carter will go on to play football so will Boomer, because they both like football and are good at it. Norm will be at the station popping off.

    2. I also agree with you BDN he seemed to like track alot but i feel like since he didnt go to state he didnt want to do it anymore.

    3. The book sounds like their is alot of sports involved which i would love to read about. Chinese handcuffs there is a couple spots about sports but not very many.

  28. if i could add one chapter in Chinese Handcuffs i would talk more about what happended to stacy and go more into depth on Dillon and jen. i want to know if they would stay together. but they did not talk about stacy at all after she came out and told everyone that the baby was hers. i wonder what she did after that.

    1. I agree i think they should have said more of after the fact on what happened to all the characters in general.

    2. I also said i wanted to know more about Dillon and Jen if they stayed together for a long time. I also would like to know what would happen to Jens kid if the dad was mean to her.

  29. If there was another chapter in Stotan! it would be about how all the swimmers push past Jeff being ill, how everyone is feeling after the outcome of state, and if they are going to keep swimming once going to college. I would also include their life goals, are they gonna separate and go to different states or stay local. I would also have the fate of Walkers and Devnees relationship. Is he finally able to break up with her or will it be a never ending cycle of making an attempt but can not go through with it. Some loose ends I would tie up is Max and his relationship with his daughter, is he able to visit her more or not. What about Elaine and the student teacher, do they keep their secret relationship, or not. These are the questions that would need to be answered or could be clearer with the addition of another chapter.

  30. Chris Crutcher did a great job with the book Chinese Handcuffs even though there were questions that we wonder that he never explain more further like Dillon family. It seem that Dillon's father get alone with him, but Cruther did not explain about Dillon's mother a lot. I would say that my favorite part of the book was the end how Jen end strong and had the courage to go the police and tell the police what had been happen to her. I also like how Dillon, Stacy and Jen all got alone better. I feel if there would be another chapter I think it would be about about Jen and Dillon friendship.

    1. I love your idea for the last chapter because I think that there was a lot of things unsaid about Jen and Dillon. I also wounder what happened to Stacey and Ryan.

    2. I agree that they need to elaborate on Dillon and jens relationship.

  31. If I could add another chapter to the end of Running Loose it would have to be how Louie go one last time to hit beckys sign. Then the day he is leaving to graduate he admits to all of the crap he did and then leaves and moves far away. Leaving all the adversity back at home behind him. Then when he moves to the place where Becky wanted to go to college. Later meeting a girl like Becky and hes happy again.

  32. I read the book chines handcuff and i thought the biggest cliff hanger i thought was the ending of t.b. did he go to jail or not in the book he was put under arrest but it never said what happened to him we know how he is really smart is there some way he could work his way out of the charges brought apon him. it also leaves the question of who Dillon is with if anyone earlier in the book Dillon was wanting to get with Jen but he also was falling for Stacy did any of that work out?

    1. I agree with you Logan those are some things that did get kind of skipped at the end of the story.

    2. i think you are right that they need to talk about Dillion and the relationships he was in with those girls because it kinda just left it at a dead spot and it didn't say how he got along with them and if he was going to continue to try and get with one of them

  33. I think that Crutcher did a good job of tying up everything in the end. The one thing that i wish was said is what happened to TB. If i could write an ending for Chinese Handcuffs, I would have TB get life in prison. After everyone finds out, Jen's family can finally live in peace. Her mom decides to give her baby up for adoption, and does not bring another man into the house. Everyone lives in peace and happiness.

  34. if i had to write 1 more chapter for Stotan the first thing it would talk about is Jeff. i personally think Jeff died because of that plaque of him that says Stotan for life. The last thing i would talk about is Walker. I think walker ended up breaking up with his girlfriend but i dont think he got Elaine.

  35. After reading the ending of Chinese Handcuffs, I was left with a lot of questions. If I were to add another chapter, I would tie up some loose ends. First I would start with Jen and Dawn living with Stacy and her kid Ryan. Jen and Stacy were really close and I could see all four of them supporting each other. I would want Dillon to be close with Jen and Stacy and have the three hang out often. I think one scene Jen, Stacy, and Dillon would be hanging out at a diner then Jen gets a message saying T.B got sentenced to life in prison. It would be nice for Jen to know that T.B could never go after another family and terrorize them. Dillon would still be living with his dad, but they are slowly getting back in contact with his mom and sister. Then I think good ending would have Dillon running a triathlon and having everyone there to support him. Then they all get to see him win.

    1. The Dillon running a triathalon idea is great. It would be full of great things and also T.B.deserves what he did.

  36. In the final chapter of Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes I would have them wrap up if Eric was actually able to swim in college, or if what Virgil did to him caused permanent damages that would make him never able to swim again. I would also show them how the kids were coping with being attacked, the abortion, the attempted suicide, and Sarah finally be able to relax after her father was but in jail. I have many issues with the relationships going on, because none of them are on a clear path as of right now. I think the last chapter would shown Jody and Eric together in college, Dale and Sarah together because they both understand what the other is going through and personally I think they would be cute together, and finally I would have Eric's mom and Carter together married and maybe even expecting babies. I would have Eric reach out to his dad, not because he wants to get to know him, but because he wants to show him that he turned out get without his help.

  37. i would add a chapter that Louise go to college and be a professional football player and have a good life

  38. I didn't really enjoy the ending of Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes simply because of the lack of closure. If I could add on, I'd write confirmation that Virgil can't get out of jail and is in for life. It would be interesting to see Carver back to see Eric after his six months on work release just to see if Eric still has all the respect he had when he first got sentenced. Maybe they could all be together at Eric's house for a dinner and the book gives short updates on each of their lives and what they're doing.

  39. If i was the author i would write about Jennifer and Dillon finally making peace on their problems like twenty years later. Jennifer and Dillon have families and are both still good friends. It would be great and honestly i liked how the book ended.

  40. I read Running Loose and I thought the book left off on an odd note. I wanted to know if Lou would get a scholarship for track or maybe for football. We don't know if he is ever caught for destroying Becky's memorial. I would like to know what other characters future holds.

  41. If i could add one more chapter to Sotan! it would mainly be about Walker and Devnee's relationship. It would come to a final decison on what tould happen between them would they keep dating or would they finally break up. Then i would also add what ends up happening to Jeff, if that means he lives a few more days or if he lives a few more months. If the author added this to the end of the book i think it would make the book way better than it is now.

  42. in the book Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes, the author leaves the book with nothing. its assumed that Sarah's dad goes to jail and her mom never comes back, after reading the epilogue, you find out Lemry adopted Sarah to make sure she was safe. you also find out that Carver would only spend some time in jail. but it doesn't really explain a lot about Eric's recovery or how his future goes with swimming. if i was the writer, i would have added another chapter and titled it 'one year later' and it explained everything that happened after the trial. it would have cleared up Eric's recovery and other questions.

  43. Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes left the audience wondering what happens to Eric's career in swimming and Jody's relationship with Eric. If I could write one more chapter, i'd write about what happened to Eric's swim career and if he ever got back into swimming after his shoulder muscles were torn. I'd also add in an ending for Jody's relationship with Eric and if she ever left him to go back to Mark or not.

  45. If I was able to write an extra chapter to Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, I leave the reader with some closer. I would have Eric get back into swimming after his shoulder mishap. I would also have Jody and Eric stay together.

  46. If I was able to write another chapter of Chinese Handcuffs it definitely would be about Stacy. Because in my opinion the book just kind of drops Stacy after she does the whole announcing her child`s father over the loud speaker at school thing happened. It would definitely cover how people are treating her now that the news is out and also how much better she feels now that the news is out.

  47. If there was another chapter i would have added more about Jen and Dillon after everything in the last chapter. If they would grow old together and if Jens step dad ever came back into play. I would like to see how Jen would act if she had a kid and the kids dad acted the same as Jens dad did?

  48. To write the ending to Running Loose I would have Louie getting a scholar ship to a college for track, and cross country. He would go for business and come back start running Norms station. I would also have Boomer getting a scholar ship for football. When Louie would come back he would get a new stone for Becky.

  50. In the end of the book of Running loose, it states "In about five minutes I'm going down to the station to get the hammer" (pg. 190). I believe that Chris Crutcher should have made another chapter about what Louie was about to do again. Louie was about to take the sledgehammer to Becky stone again.

  51. in the book running loose i think there could have been a better ending. i think its kind of a clif hanger in my opinion. i guess my only question is louis going to break beckys memorial again?

  52. if i were to add an extra chapter to Chinese handcuffs i would make it talk about how Dillion relationship is mended back together with Jen and Stacey after everything that they had all went through. i would make sure to talk about how they all get along better than what it was left off on. i would have also had T.B. end in a different way and not just go to jail because i believe he deserved so much more than just being arrested and thrown away. i would have also had a part about Dillions family starting to get along much better than they were and maybe slowly becoming somewhat of a family again.
