Stotan!, Chinese Handcuffs, Running Loose, and Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes all involve intense topics that add to the plot.  Talk about the point in which you became hooked into your book.  What did Chris Crutcher do to hook you? Describe any moment or moments in the book where you didn't want to put the book down.  What will you always remember about this book?

  1. Chris hooked me by making Becky die that really made me want to read more, because i was surprised she died just like that. Ill always remember when Boomer lit up Washington.

    3. good point Dylan! i would have to say that the first part that hooked me was the hit on Washington because the whole book got better at that point. I will never forget when Becky died.

  2. The book completely turned around when they hit chapter 10. Everything blew up, Boomer striking out at Louie but also comforting him. Becky, just Becky. I can't even imagine what Louie must have felt when he got the news. I can not wait to see how Chris portrays Louie's way of coping with this loss.

  3. I think for me I was hooked in Staying Fat for Sarah Bynres once Dale started talking how he didn't really think Sarah's burns came from a pot of spaghetti. Then I wanted to know what actually happened and what Dale was talking about. Chris Crutcher used foreshadowing to keep me involved in the book and wanting more. The thing I am going to remember the most form this book is how connected I felt to Sarah. I felt like I knew her and I could relate to some of the things she was going through. Another thing I wont forget is how loyal of a friend Eric was to not just Sarah in the book but to all of his friends like Jody and Steve.

    1. I think Chris Crutcher did a great job using foreshadowing in his book to keep readers interested. The little hints that he dropped also made me want to know what actually happened to Sarah Byrnes. I hope you're enjoying the book as much as I am!

    2. i agree when dale was hinting about her burns not being from a pot of spaghetti it made me read more and more just because i really wanted to find out. the connection between these characters are really strong but they are really weird i think the only reason shara and eric became friends in the first place is because of their shared deformities.

    3. I agree, Crutcher used foreshadowing very well, leaving the reader to want more. Sarah is a relatable character in the fact that she doesn't exactly fit in, in my opinion. I also really liked Eric's loyalty throughout the book with his friends.

  4. Chinese Handcuffs involves sexual harassment, a topic not usually discussed in school. In the book Jen has been sexually harassed not only by her father, but by her step-father as well. The reason why this made me want to read more is because I want to learn more about it. Since we do not talk about this topic in school, Chinese Handcuffs helps me learn more about this heavy topic. I will always remember how in detail Chris Crutcher explains all of the heavy topics in the book.

    1. I agree with you that it talks about *sexual assault* and in today's society its not talked about unless someone is suing someone for it. I feel like its something that people want to talk about but do not want to because they do not know how to tell someone or people do not know how to support someone who has gone through it.

    2. I agree. Chris Crutcher does a very good job going into deep detail about this topic and what this could do to a person.

    4. I agree with you! this book taught me things about how people deal with abuse an try to get help but they are afraid to hurt other around them.

    5. I agree that it isn't discussed enough. We don't talk about it because we don't know how to. I hope that the more people who read this book, know more about these topics. Happy reading!

  5. I am reading Stotan. I became hooked in the book when Jeff had to go to the hospital during a swim meet. After being in the hospital a couple days he found out he had a serious blood disease. He soon left the hospital and was stuck in his house the rest of the book because his parents would not let him leave. He was in really bad shape and believed he was going to die soon. After finding out about Jeffs condition, I could not stop reading. I was stuck in the book, trying to find out what will happen to Jeff. Sadly the book ended without revealing if Jeff pulls through or dies from the disease. I will never forget how the rest of the swim team risked getting disqualified from the state, to swim the first three legs of the relay for Jeff. This showed just how strong the brotherhood was between all of the boys. Although the book left me wondering about what happened to Jeff, it was overall a very good read.

    2. Sounds like an interesting read. I can relate to a tragic event in my book Running Loose, Becky Sanders gets involved in a car accident and she passes away.

    3. i am also reading this book and after this was said about what happened to Jeff it was very cool to see how his friends responded and wanted to be with him and take care of him and wanted to do everything for him.

    4. I feel like that would not be an easy thing to read about, but it sounds interesting. My book also left me wanting to continue reading in order to find out what happens to the characters. I like the teamwork aspect and how they stood up and did something for their teammate. It sounds really good.

  6. The point of the book that really got me hooked on Running Loose was Trouts football game against Salmon River. The game where Coach Lednecky ordered his players to take out the opposing teams star quarterback. The sheer suspense leading up to the game was enough to make me eager to keep going, I had to know what happens. As the moment arrives, and Boomer slams Washington, their QB, straight into a bench. The most memorable part about that moment was Louie sticking up for Washington and calling out Boomer for the illegal hit. It really shows some insight for all characters involved, on how they think and act. Definitively one of the most important moments of the book, period.

    2. I completely agree, the football game was an extremely exciting moment in the book. Chris Crutcher really ends the game with a cliff hanger by not going into detail about Washington's injury.

    3. I would agree as well when Boomer took out Washington out of the game was really a high point and grab my attention as well. I really like how described Crutcher described the seen he really made it feel like you where there and could see and hear and feel the intestacy of it.

  7. In my book Stotan, I have read some interesting topics. When Stotan Week started i could not put my book down. Chris Crutcher put so many visuals in my head that even i could see what walker and his friends were pushed into doing. After all that training they headed to the swim meets and then Jeff suddenly collapsed in the pool during the 100 backstroke. I was devastated when the bell rang for the next class and will have to continue at another time. One of the moments I will never forget is when Max arrived at the savage house to make sure O'Brian doesn't mess with Nortie again with pure intimidation.

  8. Chinese Handcuffs had me hooked in mostly instantly once I started reading. The part that really pulled me in was after Jen got a concussion and was acting fishy towards Coach Sherman. From that point on I knew there was something deeper happening. Chris Crutcher is very descriptive and detailed in all of his scenes. I like how the book isn't predicable and brings new surprises throughout. I'll always remember that not everyone has it lucky in life and how it shines light on important issues.

    1. Chris Crutcher is very good at adding in things we can relate to or understand. As young adults we can read these harder, more sensitive topics. I really agree that he is descriptive and detailed. He is also good at keeping our attention through our book choice.

    2. I agree with i how i like that the book isn't predicable. We never really new what was going to happen next. I also agree with how Jen got weird towards her coach, I never would of expected it to happen.

    3. I agree with you Sydney. The part that I think is fishy is that Coach Sherman never tried to push the issue any. Because as a coach or a teacher then you`re probably a mandatory reporter. So if Sherman even had a lick of suspicion about making her take her little sister home then she should`ve reported it to a higher authority because it`s the right thing that she should`ve done.

  9. Chinese handcuffs is packed with abuse, suicide, and just an all around very intense story line. i think the part that really caught my attention is the abuse that jen receives because it is just not right that she had her real dad and her stepdad do the same thing to her. the reason i didnt want to stop during this point was because we never hear alot about this very important topic and i think that it should be more know to the world. i will always remember how not everyone has it easy in life and it may seem like it on the outside but on the inside they have some deep demons.

  10. I got hooked on Chinese hand cuffs right at the beginning of the book when the main characters were around our age they are in high school and the characters are relative to me. the book got me really hooked when it got into Dillon dealing with his brothers death and how to deal with it. I am not really sure what to think about the part of Jen being molested by her father and then her step father, but it weird to see that this is happening still today and how people deal with something like that.

  11. I became hooked and really into my book when Louie called Lendecky out on the game when he set Boomer up to take out Washington. Boomer tock Washington out for a couple weeks out of the season. Also how Madison just sat there and looked the other way and did not say anything just looked the other way. Crutcher hooked me with the way he described the whole atmosphere like you can picture and imagine and feel like you were on the field with the football team. The point that I really couldn't put down the book was when Crutcher says if Becky would have stayed around and when Becky died I couldn't put it down. The thing I will always remember about Running Loose is that Becky died.

  12. The only thing that really got me hooked into the book was when Jennifer told Dillon about what her stepdad has been doing to her in another one Dillon's boring letters to his dead brother. The author didn't really hook me with anything too interesting, but when Jennifer told Dillon the secret, i became interested in finding out what would happen next. Moments that I didn't want to put the book down include when Dillon went after Jennifer when she took off right in the middle of the basketball game. I was wondering what would happen next. One thing that I will remember about this book are all the chapters that start with a letter. Boy, I didn't like that one bit. I hope the next book i read doesn't do that.

  13. I am reading the book Stotan!. Before I got to the plot, I got pretty bored with the book and I didn't find it that interesting. I didn't really want to read the book until I got to chapter 11 and 12. When I got to chapter 12, I didn't want to stop reading. In chapter 12, I found out that one of the main characters, one of the narrators best friends, got very sick. This character's name is Jeff. In this chapter, Jeff found out that he had a blood disease and he didn't know how long he was going to live. He told his friends that he was going to die soon. Now the book has me on the edge of my seat, waiting to find out what happens, which I hope does not include Jeff dying. Two things I will always remember about this book is Nortie and his abusive father and Jeff getting sick and possibly dying. I can't wait to continue reading this book and find out how it ends.

  14. I became hooked on Chinese Handcuffs when I found out that Preston took his life in front of his own brother. Chris Crutcher brings sore topics to the front line instead of hiding them in the back. He makes sure that they never get forgotten or skipped over; forcing us to talk about the sad reality. The majority of the world likes to avoid talking about the elephant in the room. We like to pretend it doesn't exist, but the reality is teen pregnancy, sexual assault, abuse, and suicide do happen all around us and it's our job to talk about it and spread awareness. I think I will always remember the graphic details of the cat and dog dying. I've never almost cried because of a book until Chris Crutcher described the torture and sad scenes.

  15. To me, Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes was an interesting and captivating book from the start. I really became hooked on the book when I noticed how odd it was that Eric 'Mobe' couldn't bring up Sarah Byrnes' father without almost getting beat up for it. I couldn't seem to put the book down when Sarah Byrnes admitted she was never actually going through a breakdown. When Jeff went to compete he went his normal fast speed through the first half of the race and then he slowed down. Lion quickly pulled him out of the pool. Jeff got rushed to the hospital because he had a blank face, so there was defiantly something wrong. They later found out he has a blood disease and may live for days or months. He does not want his friends to be around him when he gets really weak. I still have to read to find out what happens to Jeff but we hope it is nothing bad. Chris Crutcher hooked me by including relationship drama, something that I can relate to and many other young adults. One moment in the book that kept me reading was when Walker and the guys went to get Norties stuff, finally tired of Norties abusive father. It stretched for a chapter but there was a lot going on, encouraging you to keep reading to find out how the situation is solved. Out of this book I will definitely remember the way the characters became family more because of Stotan! week.

    1. his girl problems are cinfusing and not healthy for either walker or devnee. if he likes elaine, he should tell both girls so he doesn't keep dragging denee along and eventually it will hurt more in the future when he finally ends it.

    2. I have to totally agree with Eli about Walker and Devnee's relationship, this is totally a toxic relationship and they need to end things as soon as possible.

  29. I'd say the part that got me hooked was when Jennifer told Dillon what her stepdad was doing to her. She made him promise not to do anything about it but knowing his character i just knew that he was going to do something so that made me want to keep reading and get to the end. I'll probably always remember the content of the book and like the intense things that happened because it was pretty thrilling.

  30. I am reading Chinese Handcuff, the part that Chris Crutcher hook me to read the book until the end was when Jen decided to tell Dillon what had been happening to her. Crutcher has a great way to express how the characters feel and that way he get the readers to keep reading.

  31. in Chinese Handcuffs, the part that really got me hooked was when Dillon flashed back to his brother Preston's suicide. It was a very intense part in the book and could not imagine my brother killing himself in front of me like that. Dillon is still trying to figure out how it came to suicide and blames himself. Crutcher found a way to also bring me back to when i played basketball. Talking about plays and the pressure of free throws. I will always remember the rape and suicide.

  32. In Running Loose, Chris Crutcher had me hooked when Becky died. It was completely unexpected and I could not wait to read more, because I did not know how Louie would handle her death. The author does an amazing job giving vivid details that draw the reader in, making them not want to put the book down. One moment that comes to mind that I will never forget from this novel is Becky's funeral mass where Louie has an emotional breakdown. I will always remember Louie's emotional breakdown during the church service because he not only blamed God for Becky's death, but he shared a lot of personal information that I think even Becky would have found embarassing.

    1. I agree that Becky's death was a big part of why I could not put the book down. I was surprised after reading what Louie said at the church and I was honestly embarrassed for him and i wish he did not say anything. The author does give very good details about about her death too it made me upset that she died.

    2. In Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, they talk about god a lot and how a god that should love and cherish everyone's lives could disform a child's face like he did for Sarah. Just like in your book Sarah Byrnes also had a mental breakdown which I'm still unsure if it is entirely fake as she says it is.

  33. In Running Loose, I became hooked on the book when Becky and Louie went skiing to the cabin. I like to be outdoors and camp, and i also like to ski, so when they went into the woods by skiing to the cabin, i got hooked on the book because i wish i could be in Louie's position. The part that hooked me was not as intense as Becky dying for example, but it really caught my attention because it would be my dream to go ski out to a deserted cabin to spend the weekend. I did not want to put the book down as they were skiing out in the woods. I also did not want to put it down when Louie was shoveling up the snow around the cabin because I like reading about outdoors stuff and I love winter and snow. I will always remember Louie having the best weekend ever with Becky at the cabin when i think about this book. Even though the cabin was not a huge part of this book compared to the Washington football play or Becky dying, I will always remember the weekend at the cabin because of how i related to it.

  34. The one thing that hooked me to Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes is when we learn that her dad abused her and her mother and that her mother just abandoned her. I want to find out what happens to her dad and where her mom ran to and if they ever find her.

  35. In Running Loose, Chris Crutcher hooked me when he had the character of Boomer light up Washington this was a very exciting moment because not only that there was controversy on Boomer for the hit but also Louie because he had made a huge seen of how wrong it was for coach Lednecky and Boomer to do that to Washington. Another big moment was when Becky had died. This was very surprising that she had died all of a sudden.

  36. i am reading Stotan and there were 2 main points that really had me interested in this book. the first thing that made me interested was when they started talking about Nortie and his abusive dad and how he would always beat Nortie and his mom. it also shocked me when Walker had to see Nortie get hit. the other main area in this book is when Jeff had to leave a swim meet to only find out he had a blood disease which took him out of swimming and he could not leave this house on top of it all Jeff really thought he was going to die soon.

  37. In Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, I was instantly hooked on the book when when Dale outs Sarah by saying there is no way that her burns came from a boiling pot of spaghetti. Sarah denies it so hard that it makes you think that there is something fishy going on and you just want to find out what. Chris Crutcher hooked me because he didn't just come out and say it. Instead of having Sarah confide in Eric and straight-up tell him, He has Dale point it out that her face was no accident, and its coming from someone who has the same background and Sarah did, with a not so great home life. Other times that I couldn't put the book down was anytime in the CAT class, in the Sacred Heart, and anytime with Sarah. I think the thing I will always remember from this book is when Jody tells Eric what Mark made her do, because you kind of know something is up, but when you figure it out it is heart wrenching.

I got really hooked on to this book by when Louie went out for track and he wanted to win in every track meet and I got hooked because I thought that for a second they weren't going to let Louie run but i knew that someone would stickup for him but i never would've guessed the coach would and i couldn't stop reading or put the book down when Louie and Washington were going to race and they started talking to each other and Washington knew that he freaked out when he got hurt and told Louie that he was a inspiration to him and that he wasn't going to let Louie win easily but he ended up beating Washington in the race and i just thought that was so cool how he did that by himself.

  42. i am reading the book running loose and the point i became hooked was when louie bad mouthed his coach. he did this because the coach wanted him, carter, and boomer to take out the biggest threat on the field as fast as they could. And louie did not agree with his coach and when he had an outburst on the field he got sent to the office that next Monday and the principal was on the coaches side and suspended him. this intrigued me because that is not how a school is supposed to work and i wanted to see what is going to happen next in the book. 43. In Running Loose, Chris Crutcher first hooked me when Louie made a big scene out on the football field. He was shouting and screaming at the coach when Boomer hurt Washington on purpose to win the game. I really got intrigued when Louie's girlfriend Becky died in the accident at the bridge. Louie didn't know what to do and he started acting in rage. Most times his anger got the best of him. I will always remember the impact Becky made on Louie throughout the novel.

  44. Chinese Handcuffs immediately hooked me when it started with Dillon and his letter to his brother. Right away, I wanted to know what happened to his brother and why he was writing those letters. It then hooked me even more when it switched to Jen's perspective and especially when it showed what happened with her and her stepdad. This book kept me hooked the entire time I was reading it and the ending left me wanting more.

  45. I think the hot topic in Chinese Handcuffs is when Jen and Dillion started getting personal and telling each other the way their lives are and what all happened to themselves when they were growing up. How Jen is sexual harrased by all the guys her mom brings home, and how Dillons brother life was.

  46. I got really hooked while reading Stotan! when Nortie hit the little kid at the center. I believe that this part of the book hooked me because it was the start of everything getting interesting in the book for me. After reading tis part of the book I didn't want to put it down because I wanted to know what was going to happen to Nortie next, was he going to be badly punished, was he going to get beat up by the kids parent, was Nortie going to take his own life like his brother? The part of the book I will never forget by far has to be when Nortie hits the little kid.

  47. While i was reading Chinese Handcuffs there honestly was many parts that got me hooked. Starting when Preston killed himself, to the way Dillon reacted to it and what he did to the bikers. Throughout the book when Dillon figured out that Stacy had Preston's baby. Even towards the end of the book I was still hooked. With the big basketball game and Jen running off. I was shocked when she said yes to Dillon helping her with the whole father situation and still didn't know what was going to happen next and wanted to keep reading.

  48. The part that hooked me in Chinese Handcuffs was when it was in the biker`s point of view. They were talking about ways to try and harm Dillon to get back at him for messing up their motorcycles. Then one of the members of the biker gang said something that had stuck in the leader`s head and made him change is mind about harming Dillon. That hooked me because it was a new point of view that we had never been exposed to before while reading the book. I will always remember this book as showing me that there is always ore then just one or two perspectives in a story. Also, that looking at the bigger picture is going to help you see the situation more clearly.

  50. The part that hooked me in Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes was when Virgil Byrnes started to appear at the hospital more and more, at least that we knew of. It added more intensity, making you wonder what Virgil was gonna do next. His creepiness intrigued me to know exactly what his next actions would be. When Virgil walked into the office at the school where Eric was, I was very hesitant on putting my book down. I could feel the tension from the book and it made me nervous for Eric. I will always remember Virgil and the ways he adds a thriller effect to the book.

  51. personally, I am not very interested in my book, Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes. i feel like it is just like every other book. there is always a mysterious person that goes missing, someone has a huge problem, and the main character has to figure out how to fix everything. if i were to say a part really opened my eyes, i would say that when dale is visited for the first time and Eric finds out about the real story with the scars.

  52. In my book Running loose, part that got me hooked on to is were Louie quiet the football team because Louie called Coach Lednecky a racist man. So when Coach Lednecky told principle Jasper to call Louie Banks up to the office. When Louie arrive to the office principle Jasper asked Louie to right a apology letter to Coach Lednecky for calling him a racist, and sexist man. That part just got me so hooked on because all of the argument going around.

  53. the part that I couldn't top reading in the book staying fat for Sarah Burns is the part where Virgil Burns attacks Eric with a knife and try's to run him over with Eric's moms car. This part of the book was filled with action and worry some parts that I couldn't believe happened to Eric. part of Virgil Burns's cruelty is shown to you in this chapter. The small details found in this chapter makes me question if the characters and story are based off a real event Mr. Crutcher has turned in to a book.

    1. That seems pretty crazy, more exhilarating then Stotan, for sure. There's a similar instance in Stotan where a character killed himself, and one of the other characters was opening up about it. But it was only touched lightly in a a few chapters, and it only served as insight into a certain character's past, really.

  56. I'm reading Stotan, and the part of this book that really drew me in was when Jeff, Walker, and Lion were getting Nortie's stuff from his parent's house see he could move him with Walker. I got really intense when Nortie's father held Lion and Walker at gun point, and asked them to leave his house immediately because they were technically breaking and entering. This scene just seemed so chaotic, and all of these things were happening at once, and considering Nortie's father had a track record of being unpredicatable, you didn't know whether or not he'd shoot Jeff, Walker, and Lion. I'll definitely remember this scene for awhile, because it is just so crazy and hectic.
